OUR HISTORY

Schwartz & Company was founded in 1922 in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia by Ruth and Abraham Schwartz. Schwartz’s strong foundation began during 1932, when Rosie, now widowed and pregnant managed the company through the Great Depression. Her determination, work ethic, and kindness got the business through the tough times and those exact qualities are what she passed on to her son Irving, who took over the business in 1947.

Founder: Ruth Schwartz

In 1956, Irving expanded the business into Sydney and began to focus on furniture and appliances. He would later open the Port Hastings store in 1960, followed by the Glace Bay location in 1975, and the New Glasgow showroom in 1978. By 1991, the Schwartz Furniture chain had grown throughout the Maritimes to 11 locations.During this time Irving had diversified the business in Real Estate, Hospitality, cable, the travel industry, and more. In 1993 Brian Purchase joined the company as CFO and helped Irving manage his diverse portfolio.
